A cell membrane is a thin, flexible selectively permeable barrier that surrounds a cell and separates its internal contents from the external environment.
It is mainly made of a phospholipid bilayer containing proteins, cholesterol, and carbohydrates. The membrane controls what substances enter and leave the cell and also plays important roles in cell signaling, communication, and maintaining the cell’s internal environment.
