An omega-3 fatty acid is a polyunsaturated fatty acid with its first double bond at the third carbon from the omega end. The primary essential omega-3 fatty acid is alpha-linolenic acid (ALA) which must be obtained from the diet. The body can convert some ALA into the longer-chain omega-3 fatty acids EPA and DHA, although conversion is limited.
