A phospholipid is a type of lipid made of a glycerol backbone, two fatty acid tails, and a phosphate-containing head group.
Because the head is hydrophilic (water-attracting) while the tails are hydrophobic (water-repelling), phospholipids naturally arrange themselves into a bilayer, which forms the basic structure of the cell membrane.
