Stone fruit are named after the hard inner stone or pit (
endocarp) that encloses the seed. 'Stone fruit' is the equivalent
culinary term for the
botanical term
drupe, although drupes such as mango, coconut and olive are not commonly referred to as stone fruit.
Varieties of stone fruit can be
cling stone or
free stone/
slip stone depending on how easily the flesh comes off the seed.
